Canada/United States: the biggest match at the Bell Centre in nearly 30 years

The match tomorrow between Canada and the United States is highly anticipated, and not just for sports reasons.

This rivalry is bigger than that, having intensified in recent weeks. #WeKnowWhy

Matthew Tkachuk has been waiting for this moment for nine years. His brother, Brady, admitted that this will be the biggest match of his life. For the Bell Centre, it is one of the biggest matches in its history. According to Renaud Lavoie, it will be the biggest home game for the CH in nearly 30 years.

Jean-Charles Lajoie and the informant discussed it, and we have to go back to 1996, at the World Cup (August), for the last major match of this sort at the Bell Centre, which opened in early 1996 (March). On that day, Canada hosted the United States. According to Lavoie, it was the best hockey game in the NHL.

Tomorrow’s match will be the modern version of that encounter from almost 30 years ago.

Of course, there have been important matches at the Bell Centre from 1996 to today, including several playoff games and some Eastern Conference finals (2010 and 2014).

But how can we forget the St. Jean match in 2021? The problem: there were only 3,000 spectators in the stands that night, which took away a bit from the excitement.

Tomorrow, the Bell Centre will be packed to the brim.

Let’s remember that the United States could qualify for the final with a win in regulation. As for Canada, regardless of the match result, everything will be decided on Monday against Finland.

In brief

– Imagine tomorrow.

– Oh really?

– Nice contract.

Extension of 7-8 minutes in the NHL: conversations are expected to take place, believes Elliotte Friedman

Wednesday, it had been an extremely long time since I last watched such a good hockey game.

Seeing the best hockey players gathered on the same ice for 60 minutes is worth it.

Watching a 10-minute overtime (three-on-three) also adds to the spectacle. Moreover, Elliotte Friedman is convinced that the NHL will have big discussions regarding the future of overtime in the Bettman circuit. The informant is not talking about 10 minutes like in the Four Nations tournament, but rather about seven to eight minutes.

In any case, Nathan MacKinnon will not be a big fan of 10 minutes.

On Wednesday, he was tired. We can understand that.

Friedman appreciates that new ideas are being tested and explored. For example, extended three-on-three hockey, obviously, but also wins in regulation worth three points and overtime wins worth two points. As for the scoring system for losses, it remains the same.

These are two points that people have been talking about a lot lately.

According to the informant from Sportsnet, people much prefer overtime to shootouts. The future of the shootout seems increasingly at risk. Good, in my opinion.

If Wednesday was an intense game, imagine the spectacle we will have tomorrow night… Renaud Lavoie even talks about the most important game at the Bell Centre in nearly 30 years.

In Brief

– Notice to interested parties.

– A player that the Habs could have in their sights.

– To listen.

– Dreamy.

– Well done.

The SKA has released a Valentine’s Day card featuring Ivan Demidov on it

On this Friday, it’s Valentine’s Day.

First of all, I want to wish a happy Valentine’s Day to everyone celebrating it.

For the occasion of the day of love and romance, the SKA of Saint Petersburg posted a Valentine’s card on TikTok, featuring Ivan Demidov.

So far, so good, but it’s when you understand what’s written on it that it can provoke reactions, especially in Montreal.

Thanks to the internet user Milena (who wrote in Russian on her account), we were able to get the translation of the message on this card.

« Why Montreal when I have you? » – SKA

Once again, the SKA shoots a little jab at the Canadiens, hoping Demidov will re-sign in Saint Petersburg.

Well thought out, nonetheless.

If it weren’t for the internet user Milena, it probably would have gone unnoticed.

I invite you to follow this Twitter/X page, as it shares interesting content about Demidov and the KHL.

We know how difficult it can be to find information in Russia…

The SKA clearly hopes to see its young prospect stay in Russia after the current season, although it seems unlikely at the moment.

Recently, Demidov was also asked about his future in Russia and the fact that Roman Rotenberg wouldn’t let him go to Montreal until he wins the Gagarin Cup.

You have to admit, that’s something…But nothing surprises us anymore with Rotenberg, who has shown us all kinds of surprises.

Let’s see what he has in store for the rest of this season.

In brief

– I’m signing!

– P.K. Subban is still as funny as ever.

– On one hand, Auston Matthews doesn’t text Marner at all during the entire Four Nations Tournament. On the other hand, William Nylander congratulated Marner for his overtime goal against Sweden.

– Should the CH try to put Patrik Laine with Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki when returning from the Four Nations Tournament break? [TSN690]

– Those are excellent puns.

“I would probably do more than just boo the national anthem.”

What seems to be causing the most reactions these days are the boos directed at national anthems, especially that of the United States.

This is making the rounds of the hockey world (and probably beyond).

With the match on Saturday evening between Canada and the United States, we should expect not only animosity but also loud boos.

Personally, I find it ridiculous because, in the end, it honors the country and the veterans who fought for all sorts of important reasons.

Cam Robinson from Elite Prospect texted an American player who wanted to remain anonymous regarding the boos of the national anthems.

He first asked what he thought about it:

He replied by saying that he didn’t like it and that it made him cringe.

Then, Robinson tried to put this player in the shoes of Canadians facing Donald Trump’s comments: mainly regarding the “threats” of annexation of the United States with Canada.

« Well, when you look at it from that point of view, I wouldn’t like another country threatening to swallow my country. Especially a country as big as the United States. I’d probably do more than just boo the national anthem. » — Anonymous American player

That’s a bold comment.

It’s probably also one of the reasons that led this player to remain anonymous.

We could try to guess who might have said that, but we wouldn’t get very far, and it wouldn’t serve any purpose.

Robinson’s follow-up question was excellent and made the American player realize some things.

And it could very well make other Americans realize things as well.

In Brief

— We will need to be patient with Reinbacher.

Ahhh, that Darius Kasparaitis.

— This will be closely monitored.

— Very interesting.

— A must-read.

Ivan Demidov: a question about his future with SKA seems to bother him

Ivan Demidov is in the last year of his contract with the KHL.

Technically, we should see him arriving in Montreal for the upcoming season. He is expected to report to the Canadiens after finishing his agreement with SKA St. Petersburg.

But Roman Rotenberg has other plans for him…

In a recent press conference, Rotenberg said he would not let him leave SKA until he wins the Gagarin Cup, which is the equivalent of the Stanley Cup in the KHL.

But what does Demidov think about this?

At the KHL All-Star Game, a journalist asked him the question… And Demidov said that “that’s how it is” in the KHL.

However, it is also clear that Demidov did not seem very amused by the question from that journalist:

Ivan Demidov had no choice but to give that answer.

He does not have the luxury of criticizing the thoughts or decisions of the SKA St. Petersburg leaders, and it would not be in his best interest to do so either.

He answered in the right way, in my opinion.

That said, it is normal to be worried about the idea of seeing him sign a contract extension in Russia. It would allow him to be a star in his country… In addition to giving him time to become a dominant player in the NHL.

But at the same time, Ivan Demidov wants to play in the National League, and he has never hidden that. He sees himself becoming an impactful player in Montreal and looks forward to playing in North America.

This is no longer a secret, after all:

Knowing that there is a possibility of seeing Demidov stay in Russia can frighten some people.

We all look forward to seeing him in the Canadiens’ uniform, in fact.

But we shouldn’t dwell too much on a statement like that when we know his desire.

In fact, we hope that this idea doesn’t linger in his mind for too long…

In Brief

– It’s going to be intense tomorrow night at the Bell Centre.

– If Sid is happy, I’m happy too!

– Classic!

– Well…

Transaction idea (Frank Seravalli): Jake Evans… to Toronto

It seems that the Jake Evans situation is becoming more complicated as time goes on.

He is (really) not close to reaching an agreement with the Canadiens on the terms of a new contract, and the possibility of seeing him leave is becoming more popular every day.

Even his clan thinks that he will be “not at all” able to sign a new deal with the Canadiens…

Obviously, everything has been said about the center player.

There’s a chance we could see him traded by the deadline because the Canadiens won’t want to lose him for nothing this summer on the market. And if that happens, we can believe that the Canadiens will be able to get a good return for his services.

Frank Seravalli (Daily Faceoff) had fun building a trade involving Evans, and it looks like this.

It’s mainly the team receiving Evans in the trade that made me jump:

  • Evans for Roni Hirvonen and a 2nd round pick

On paper, the idea is still logical:

Roni Hirvonen is viewed as a B prospect.

We’re talking about a 23-year-old center player who was selected in the second round (59th overall) in 2020 and has been playing in the American League since arriving in North America in 2023.

But regardless of the return, where it becomes logical in Seravalli’s “proposal” is in the quality of the return. I don’t see the Canadiens trading Evans to a divisional rival, but that will be for another discussion.

A 2nd round pick with a prospect is exactly what the Canadiens received for Artturi Lehkonen. Evans and Lehkonen are similar in a way because they were filling the same role in Montreal… But Lehkonen exploded after arriving in Colorado.

My question is this: would that be enough for you to be convinced to trade Evans?

He holds great value in Montreal because he fills an important role… But on the other hand, the Canadiens need to get something in return for his services instead of losing him for free this summer when the player will be able to test the free-agent market.

The Evans situation continues to stir discussion, ultimately… And it will continue to be the case until March 7.

We’ll have to see if he is traded or not!

In Brief

– Happy Birthday!

– I agree with the choice, myself.

– It’s up to you to answer it!

– I love it.

TVA Sports: negotiate with Gary Bettman while telling him to get lost

I began my bachelor’s degree in sociology at UQAM in January 2001.

I left the program in February of the same year. It really wasn’t for me.

I went back to school – even though my father was sure I would never return – in September of the same year. This time, I was enrolled in a program that represented me 100%: business administration.

I will always remember one of my first classes when I was still wondering what the bacc in admin would look like.

My prof told us right from the start something like:

“Welcome to what will be your journey in the business world. If there’s one thing to remember, it’s this: your personal values must always align with those of your company. Always ensure that what you say or do as an individual does not harm your company, and vice versa.”

This principle applies equally to owner-entrepreneurs and to employees, whether salaried or contractual.

And this principle, Elon Musk Jean-Nicolas Blanchet, a columnist and assistant sports director at the Journal de Montréal/Québec, did not take into account last night.

In short, Blanchet is paid to manage the sports department at JDM and JDQ, as well as to write texts that stir up passions, opinions… even controversies.

And he does it well! Because according to the objective described above, he stirs up reactions and controversies.

Except that yesterday, Jean-Nicolas wrote a column titled Get lost, Gary!

The column was first published on the websites of the Journal de Québec and the Journal de Montréal, but Quebecor’s strategy is to use the same content in multiple locations, so it also ended up simultaneously featured on the main page of TVA Sports. All this at 7:00 PM…

The column is still highlighted on the homepage of TVA Sports, by the way.

Although I can understand the guidelines used by Jean-Nicolas Blanchet (Gary Bettman stated that organizing regular Senators games in Quebec was complicated, further snubbing the people of Quebec), the title and the timing of the publication were at least questionable.

Blanchet is a guy from Quebec who lives in Quebec. And all the people from Quebec that I know – who love hockey – have digested their share of Gary Bettman and his lack of love for their city.

The problem is that last night, TVA Sports director Louis-Philippe Neveu was spotted in the same box as Gary Bettman, Bill Daly, and Marty Walsh at the Bell Centre…

And that between January 1 and March 1, only Rogers and TVA Sports can negotiate with the NHL regarding Canadian national broadcasting rights for 2026 and beyond. It was Gary Bettman himself who shared this info in Montreal, the day he praised Amazon and online broadcasting (which he believes is the future).

Make no mistake, this week, there are people at Sportsnet and TVA Sports negotiating – formally or informally – with the NHL…

Imagine Gary Bettman chatting/negotiate with TVA Sports at the Bell Centre and then receiving a screenshot from a member of his staff of a column titled Get lost, Gary! on the TVA Sports website…

How would you feel if you were in Gary’s shoes?

Let’s just say that last night in the Bell Centre walkway, it was a topic of discussion. Many found this article at least awkward and poorly timed. Why did a boss at the Journal decide to publish such a column on TVA Sports while other bosses are negotiating for the upcoming TV rights, rights that could dictate the future of the station?

In short, to return to my earlier introduction: why did the values and actions of a person employed by a company go against the needs of that same company?

I don’t know. And I find all this extremely awkward.

But in the end, we cannot accuse Quebecor of controlling the narrative, censoring its columnists and/or dictating the message that its employees must spread. Oh boy, no!

Yes, Stephen A. Smith has often criticized Roger Goodell, even though the NFL is presented on ESPN on Monday nights. But Smith has a superstar status, and the contract between the NFL and ESPN is already signed.

We will see if this has consequences and if it has embarrassed TVA Sports. It reminds me of Justin Trudeau criticizing another fierce negotiator in Donald Trump, but wanting to negotiate in harmony with him at the same time…

Publishing this column right in the middle of the 4 Nations tournament (held in Montreal and broadcast on TVA Sports) may not have been the strategy of the century. Even under the guise of defending freedom of expression…

But still, it’s the boss in me who just wrote that conclusion. The columnist in me would probably have published the column anyway, hehe.

Overtime

The CF Montreal faces the Philadelphia Union this afternoon in Orlando.

No images from this match will be shared and no one can access it (except with a drone, hehe). The request to play this match behind closed doors supposedly came from CF Montreal, according to the excellent Jonathan Tannerwald.

I will never understand why a club would want to hide its match like that.

Preseason games are broadcast in the NHL…

Practices at the CN Complex in Brossard are open to the public…

What is so important that it cannot be disclosed in a friendly match of CF Montreal?

Orlando City invited all season ticket holders to attend their game a week ago today. The CF Montreal, on the other hand, is completely shutting its doors.

You would need to explain it to me.

Rocket: David Reinbacher trained with a regular jersey

David Reinbacher has not yet played this season.

He suffered a significant injury during training camp that forced him to go under the knife.

But according to the latest news, his return is approaching quite quickly.

This is evident as Reinbacher trained in a regular jersey this morning.

He joined the Rocket’s practice on the ice in Laval.

This is a good sign for what lies ahead:

It should be noted that according to Vincent Demuy’s information, Logan Mailloux was not on the ice with the rest of his teammates.

His health status will need to be monitored, and the Rocket announced that Mailloux will “need a more extensive medical evaluation.”

Hoping it’s not too serious…

Laurent Dauphin — also absent from practice — is being evaluated on a daily basis:

There is still no official date for David Reinbacher’s return, but seeing him progress at this rate is interesting.

We all can’t wait to see him play games because he needs to develop… And we should also remember that he left a good impression at the end of last season with the Rocket.

He will likely need some time to regain his rhythm, but that’s okay. The important thing is that he is able to return to play and continue his development… Especially since the Rocket is currently at the top of the AHL standings.

This could help the defender find success quite quickly.

In brief

– Nice thought.

– To be continued.

– The great Marcus Stroman.

– Oh really?

Bennett with Marchand and Jarvis: A perfect trio for the match against the Americans

I can’t wait for tomorrow’s Canada vs. United States match.

And you?

Considering how good the performance was for the first game of the Maple Leaf Wednesday, we expect the matchup against the Americans to be really interesting. And it is likely to be the case with the talent from both nations!

For the first match of the tournament, Jon Cooper decided to leave Sam Bennett out. The Panthers forward watched the game from above the bridge… But he won’t have to wait long before having the chance to prove himself.

Tomorrow’s game is likely to be rough and physical: that’s why it makes sense to see Canada include him in their bottom-six.

The top-six remains unchanged… But Bennett will take Travis Konecny’s place in the lineup.

The three Lightning players are grouped on the fourth unit, while Bennett forms a trio with Brad Marchand and Seth Jarvis.

This trio is going to be tiring…

Note that Cale Makar was absent from practice this morning with Canada. The defender is sick:

Bennett, Jarvis, and Marchand are three players who closely resemble each other.

They are all capable of producing offensively when needed… But they are characterized by their intensity and enthusiasm on the ice.

And I have a feeling they will be on the ice often against the Tkachuk brothers’ trio!

Matthew and Brady were so good last night that Canada will need to find a way to slow them down… And maybe combining three guys like Bennett, Jarvis, and Marchand is how that can happen.

Lastly, we do not yet know who the starting goalie will be for tomorrow, but we should expect Jordan Binnington to be in net.

He had a relatively good game on Wednesday and he was especially good in overtime.

Overtime

The status of Cale Makar will notably be something to watch for tomorrow’s game.

With Shea Theodore’s injury, it complicates things a bit.

Let’s remember that Thomas Harley is in Boston as a backup:

«Jake Evans’ clan does not believe at all that he will get along with the Canadian»

Trade Jake Evans… don’t trade Jake Evans… extend Jake Evans’ contract… don’t extend Jake Evans’ contract…

Currently, everyone is wondering what the future holds for the center player with the Canadiens. And let’s just say that hearing him speak in the past tense about the CH hasn’t exactly reassured people.

On the contrary.

Of course, it’s possible that Evans, a player who has never experienced such a situation, doesn’t have a good read on the situation. It’s also possible that he is too emotional about it to keep a cool head.

But it’s also possible that he is really nearing the end of his time in the city.

Regarding this, Tony Marinaro (Sick Podcast) revealed information about the negotiations. What he claims is that, at the moment, the Evans camp does not believe at all that they will be able to come to an agreement with the Canadiens.

Those are strong words, indeed.

Does this mean he is asking for too many years? Too much money per year? Does he have a chance of going elsewhere in the coming weeks, possibly by the deadline?

That is a possibility on the table, indeed.

That being said, it’s also important to keep in mind that things can change quickly. Sometimes, it only takes a phone call to change the wind’s direction.

And what helps in turning the tide on certain contract processes is a deadline that is approaching. And the one on March 7 could potentially change things by creating a sense of urgency.

extension

If he is traded, one must wonder if Joel Armia, his faithful companion on the bottom-6 and on the Canadiens’ penalty kill, will be traded in turn.

And if he is, will it be with the same team as Evans?
