China’s Terracotta Army visits Montreal

The Warrior Emperor and China’s Terracotta Army exhibit opens at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

A new exhibit, The Warrior Emperor and China’s Terracotta Army, will open at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts next month. From February 11 to June 26, visitors can view 240 pieces from a  remarkable Chinese archeological discovery, including ten massive terracotta warrior statues.

The statues, discovered in 1974, were part of the largest archeological find in China and one of the largest in the world. Crafted over 2,000 years ago, the terracotta statues depict the soldiers of the First Emperor of China, and were found standing guard over the tomb complex of Emperor Ying Zheng. The location of the discovery has since been added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Montreal exhibition will explore this period of Chinese history, leading visitors chronologically through three sections: The Rise of Qin (9th C – 221 BC); The Terracotta Army of the “First Emperor of China” (221 – 206 BC); andThe Harmonious Era of the Han (206 BC – 220 AD).

For more information about the exhibit, see the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts website.
