Christina Aguilera calls off American tour

The singer becomes the third artist in a week to cancel shows in North America.

Yesterday (May 25), U2 announced the cancellation of the North American leg of its tour due to lead singer Bono’s back surgery and recuperation. Last week, Limp Bizkit decided to do the same, citing the need to find concert venues without fixed seating so fans could get up and dance.

Now Christina Aguilera adds her name to the list. She thinks she does not have enough rehearsal time to put on a quality show and so cancelled North American shows. The singer’s tour was supposed to start July 15 in Uncasville, Connecticut. There was one planned Canadian stop on July 20 in Toronto.

That was the official reason released by the artist. Other rumours list disappointing ticket sales and an underperforming single, Not Myself Tonight, which people think copies Lady Gaga’s sound.

Christina Aguilera will be at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards on June 6. She shoots her first film, Burlesque, in the fall. The real test of her popularity will be June 8 when her new album, Bionic, hits store shelves. The singer plans to announce new dates soon for shows in 2011.
