Christmas markets light up cities worldwide

Many cities around the world celebrate the holiday with traditional outdoor markets.

As the weather begins to turn colder and the holiday season approaches, cities around the world come alight with traditional outdoor Christmas markets offering local and festive foods, drinks and handcrafted presents, reports the Daily Mail.

Berlin, Germany comes alive this season with about 50 markets dotted around the capital. The largest of these is the Weihnachts Zauber in Gendarmenmarkt square, which opens on November 21 and runs through until the end of the year.

In the Czech Republic, Prague celebrates the holiday in kind, with two festive fairs opening November 26 and operating through until New Year’s Day. The two seasonal markets will operate in Staromestske namesti (Old Town Square) and Vaclavske namesti (Wenceslas Square), while the city’s main street, Havelske trziste, also puts on a great show for Christmas.

Madrid, Spain; Helsinki, Finland; and Lille, France all have their own Christmas markets coming to town for the holidays. In the U.K., both Birmingham and Winchester have their own take on the festive tradition, while stateside, New York City pulls out all the stops with several markets of their own, including the Columbus Circle Holiday Market near Central Park, and the Union Square Holiday Market at 14th Street and Broadway.
