Colin Firth To Play George VI

Colin Firth will play King George VI in The King’s Speech.

The Weinstein Company announced that they have acquired the rights to produce the film The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth.

The film will be directed by Tom Hooper (John Adams, Elizabeth I) and written by David Seidler (Tucker: The Man and His Dream).

Firth, who will play King George "Bertie" VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II, will star opposite Geoffrey Rush.  The king took the throne following his brother’s abdication.  With a nervous stutter and being considered unfit to rule, King George VI asked Lionel Logue (Rush) for help.  He then managed to find his voice and govern the country through war.

Filming is set to begin later this year, and the flick should hit theatres next year.

In the meantime, Colin Firth will star in Dorian Gray, although a release date has not been announced.  He will also star with Jim Carrey in A Christmas Carol, opening on November 6.
