Contract extension: Mikko Rantanen should not make a decision before Friday

The Carolina Hurricanes may be in a playoff position and could make a good run in the series, but the team could still be a seller at the trade deadline.
Why? Because there’s a certain Mikko Rantanen who isn’t unanimous in Carolina. With the Canes, the Finn has only five points in nine games. We saw him against the Canadiens at the Bell Center: he seems uninterested in the game.
And now Elliotte Friedman has brought some information that will complicate the file even more. According to the informant, the forward shouldn’t make any decision about his future before the trade deadline (Friday, March 7).
Friedman on Headlines says it is unlikely Rantanen will make any decision by Friday, so now it is Carolina’s decision to make whether they keep him or flip him at the deadline.

So, the Hurricanes’ GM is facing a big dilemma: trade Rantanen or keep him, try to win the Stanley Cup and/or sign him, and potentially lose him for nothing.
Because if he doesn’t sign before Friday, Carolina could lose him for nothing on July 1st. Let’s say that wouldn’t be ideal…
Eric Tulsky paid Martin Necas, Jack Drury, and two draft picks for the Finn’s services (and Taylor Hall)… That’s a lot, and it wouldn’t be worth it for just twenty games from the player.
Of course, if Carolina wins the Stanley Cup, it would be worth it, but for now, we’re far from that possibility…
Meanwhile, Necas has 13 points in 12 games with Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche. Drury, on the other hand, has more goals than Rantanen.
