Controversial anti-museum opens in Tasmania

Australian MONA features controversial art and subversive exhibits.

The largest privately-owned museum in Australia, the newly-opened Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) classifies itself as an ‘anti-museum’ with its controversial and subversive works of art.

Located in Hobart, Tasmania, the contentious museum intends to make visitors think about the human condition through shocking and boundary-pushing themes such as sex, scatology and death.

The museum, which opened last month, features ancient, modern and contemporary art, with a bar, cafe and even its own cemetery on site.

"Monanism is the opening exhibition of the Museum of Old and New Art. It contains David Walsh’s favorite works; the ones that represent him and present him to the world for interest, outrage or indifference," explains the visitor’s guide. The exhibition runs until July 19.

The guide also comes with some special maps, helping parents (and other inclined visitors) avoid the sexually-explicit content, while another map shows sensitive visitors how to avoid areas with strobe lights.

Admission is free and the museum is open from 11 am to 7 pm each day.
