The film beat stiff competition from the films Capote, Good Night, and Good Luck, Munich, and the predicted favourite, Brokeback Mountain.  Ang Lee, who won Best Director for Brokeback Mountain, had previously been nominated in the same category for 2001’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The Best Male Actor title went to Philip Seymour Hoffman for his performance as author Truman Capote.  Reese Witherspoon was named Best Actress for her work in the film Walk the Line, in which she portrayed June Carter.

Best Supporting Actor and Actress were George Clooney (Syriana) and Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener).  March of the Penguins earned an Oscar for Best Documentary.

Wallace & Gromit: The curse of the Were-Rabbit beat the competition from Corpse Bride and Howl’s Moving Castle to win the title of Best Animated Film.

The South African film Tsotsi, directed by Gavin Hood, was named Best Foreign Language Film.

Filmmaker Robert Altman, who is best known for his work with MASH and Gosford Park, was recognized for his life and career excellence.
