Crown Prince Philippe pays tribute to King Albert

Belgium’s Crown Prince Philippe has paid tribute to King Albert II following his abdication earlier this week, and vowed to put all his efforts into the position.

Belgium’s Crown Prince Philippe has paid tribute to King Albert II following his abdication.

The 53-year-old royal has spoken for the first time in public after his father announced he is going to step down from his position on July 21, the country’s National Day, and let Philippe take the reins, and the heir has vowed to put all his efforts into the position.

He said: ”I would like to pay tribute to the king’s reign over the last 20 years.

”I’m well aware of the responsibilities that weigh on my shoulders.

”I will continue to invest my time in this role with all my heart.”

Earlier this week, Albert announced he was giving up the position because he is no longer healthy enough to carry out his royal engagements as he wishes to.

In a national televised address, he said: ”I realise that my age and my health are no longer allowing me to carry out my duties as I would like to.

”Prince Philippe is well prepared to succeed me.”

Albert – who made his announcement just days after his and Queen Paola of Belgium’s 54th wedding anniversary – would have marked his second decade on the throne in August.
