Research conducted by scientists at Duke University and Children’s Hospital of Arkansas shows that babies with allergies to peanuts got rid of those allergies when they were administered oral medication with the allergen base.
Despite the hopes raised by this study, lead author, Dr. Wesley Burks, does not recommend parents of allergic children to try experimenting at home.
For nearly five years, Burks and his colleagues administered a gradual dose of peanut protein to 33 children with allergies. The researchers observed a decreased amount of immunoglobulin E, an antibody that causes an immune response, in these children.
