Cutting Out Fructose
According to research conducted by the University of Florida, it is best to avoid fructose. Evidence has shown that avoiding fructose is better than banning bread, potatoes and rice.
Dr. Richard Johnson, the principal author of the study, explained, "There’s a fair amount of evidence that starch-based foods don’t cause weight gain like sugar-based foods and don’t cause the metabolic syndrome like sugar-based foods."
Table sugar is composed in equal parts of both fructose and glucose. Consuming too much fructose increases uric acid, which causes inhibition of insulin, and in the worst cases, type 2 diabetes.
Obviously, the amount of fructose being ingested is not the only factor that can lead to obesity. Too many calories, as well as eating junk food and saturated fats also contribute to that problem.
In the United States, 33% of the population is overweight or obese.
