Dark chocolate – a ‘super food’?

Researchers found, as long as it wasn’t heated, dark chocolate and natural cocoa powder had more compounds than fruit.

Dark chocolate and cocoa powder contained more antioxidants and polyphenols – which are thought to help protect the body against cancer and heart disease – than fruit compounds from acai berries, cranberries and pomegranates, according to scientists at the Hershey Centre for Health & Nutrition.

The research, published in the Chemistry Central Journal, showed that both dark chocolate and cocoa powder had more antioxidant and flavonols than fruit.

“Cacao seeds should be considered a ‘super fruit’ and products derived from cacao seed extracts, such as natural cocoa powder and dark chocolate, as ‘super foods,’” said lead scientist Dr Debra Miller.

The scientists recommend that to get the benefits of this new "super fruit," use dark chocolate and cocoa powder for recipes and drinks, however keep in mind that the benefits will be lost if the chocolate is heated.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, the research results provide another excuse to indulge the sweet tooth – just remember – all things in moderation.
