Darren Dreger raises the possibility of trading Allen or Montembeault

Before the start of this season, we wondered what was going to happen with Cayden Primeau.

We thought he was going to be placed in the run-off because he hadn’t yet proved he belonged on the show… But no.

Tonight, the Canadiens play their 10th game of the regular season, and the young man is still with the team.

Everyone knows that, at some point, the Tricolore will make a decision because the ménage à trois can’t go on.

It’s simply illogical because Samuel Montembeault and Jake Allen deserve to play. I’m not sure they’re very cheerful at the moment, knowing full well that someone’s coming to stand in their way…

We’ve talked about practically every option concerning Primeau. The Habs could decide to trade him… Or they could take the risk of losing him for nothing by placing him in the ballot.

But there’s also a world where Kent Hughes decides to keep the young man in order to trade Montembeault or Allen for a return of some kind. I don’t believe it, but Darren Dreger raised the possibility in his most recent TSN interview:

There’s a decision to be made. The Habs won’t say when it’s going to happen, but it includes the possibility of trading one of the three goalies. – Darren Dreger

I don’t see Samuel Montembeault being traded because we know the organization has a lot of faith in him.

The deal, on the other hand, is that Monty is in the last year of his contract and he needs to be able to play if he wants to sign a long-term deal.

As it is, it will be difficult for him to do so if the CH insists on keeping three goalies up top.

I’d also be surprised to see Allen leave… But Kent Hughes keeps saying he wants to improve the team by adding big talent. If the CH GM gets an offer he can’t refuse for his veteran, my little finger tells me he’ll be ready to dance.

Because right now, the goalie’s value is skyrocketing. Jake Allen has literally been one of the NHL’s best goaltenders since the start of the campaign, and his stats are proof of that.

  • .930 efficiency rate
  • 2.63 goals-against average
  • 3-0-1 record

It’s almost impossible to ask for more.

Frankly, I’m looking forward to the conclusion of this matter, because it’s starting to get heavy for everyone. Both for the organization and for the fans.
