Variety reports that filmmaker David Cronenberg is currently in negotiations to direct the political thriller.
Based on a Robert Ludlum novel, Denzel Washington is set to play the lead role. Set during the Cold War, the story follows two men, an American and a Soviet, who are working together to stop a sinister plot that plans to overthrow all governments of the world.
The screenplay is being written by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (3:10 to Yuma).
MGM hopes to begin production on the project in the spring. This would be the first film for Cronenberg since last year’s Eastern Promises.
