Where to go snowshoeing in Canada

When it comes to winter activities, snowshoeing often doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Compared to downhill or Nordic skiing, it has few barriers to entry and can be done pretty much anywhere with decent snowfall, even in urban areas. What’s more, it’s still a great form of outdoor exercise. With endless trails throughout the country, here are some excellent spots where you can go snowshoeing this winter.

A paradise for winter activities, including skating and Nordic skiing, Kivi Park also has more than 25 kilometres of snowshoe trails that are maintained throughout the season. You can even rent equipment on-site, making it an easy go-to spot.

Of course, this area gets all the hype for the world-renowned Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, but a region this beautiful and snow-heavy also has some of the most incredible snowshoeing available. Tourism Whistler offers guided snowshoe excursions and has excellent information on where to find self-guided trails.

The Nelson Nordic Ski Club maintains an excellent series of trails not far outside town, near the turnoff for Whitewater Ski Resort. This region gets tons of powdery snow each year, and the trails wind around towering cedars, making it perfectly picturesque for a snowshoe excursion.

Most paths in Gatineau Park can be traversed by snowshoe come winter, but around the Philippe Lake trailhead, there are many moderate to challenging trails that can become an overnight snowshoe adventure. Book a cozy yurt or cabin and strap on your snowshoes for a fun, easy getaway close to Ottawa.

Peyto Lake is an iconic vista in any season, but it becomes the perfect snowshoe trail in the winter months. It’s a great way to see this iconic view, which can get pretty busy during the high season; in winter, you’ll likely have far fewer people to share it with. There’s also a ton of other options for snowshoeing along the Icefields Parkway, from beginner to difficult.
