Do caffeine and carbs enhance athletic performance?

A new study reveals that combining caffeine and carbohydrates may improve athletes’ performance.

Caffeine is regarded by some as a potent stimulant, and combined with carbohydrates, it appears to improve athletes’ performance, according to a new study published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition.

"There is already plenty of research that shows that caffeine and carbohydrate improve endurance, but this study shows that there is also a positive effect on skill and performance,” said lead author Mayur Ranchordas.

Researchers carried out three different soccer game simulations of 90 minutes testing agility, dribbling, heading and kicking accuracy.

"We found that the combination of carbohydrate and caffeine allowed players to sustain higher work intensity for the sprints, as well as improving shooting accuracy and dribbling during simulated soccer activity.”

Additional studies are needed to understand what factors can boost or inhibit the effects of caffeine and why some people may achieve enhanced performance with caffeine while others do not.

Excessive consumption may be harmful, since both caffeine and carbohydrates in large quantities are not known to be beneficial to health. A recent report noted that caffeine could cause illness and negatively influence mood and overall health.
