A ‘Doctor Who’ party is being planned for Buckingham Palace.

Sophie, the Countess of Wessex – a huge fan of the sci-fi show – is hosting the event to mark the 50th anniversary of the BBC series on November 18.

A number of the actors who have played the titular Doctor – such as David Tennant, Matt Smith and new doctor Peter Capaldi are expected to attend.

A palace source told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: ”It is unusual for a television series to be accorded this kind of recognition from the Royal family, but ‘Doctor Who’ has become – like James Bond – a great British institution and so it seems right to give it a bit of a pat on the head.”

‘Doctor Who’ – which will have an official celebration of its 50th when it screens a special new episode on November 23 – has long been a hit with the British royals, and the Prince of Wales and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall visited the set of the show during a break in Wales in March.

During their visit, prince Charles came face-to-face with one of the show’s robotic villains, a Dalek, and couldn’t resist mimicking its signature catchphrase, ”Exterminate!”
