Don’t panic if your child bites

No need to panic if your child bites, but don’t ignore it either.

Biting is very common among children six months to six years of age. It is not surprising that babies bite. Children can’t speak, so they need to express their displeasure in other ways like clapping, shouting, pushing and biting.

Experts say you shouldn’t scold your child, and definitely do not bite back. You need to make it very clear that biting hurts – show them the toothmarks they’ve left. And apologize to the parents of the child who was bitten. Though your child cannot speak, he can hear. As he gets older, he will start to understand that it is wrong and will abandon the annoying habit.

Curiously, biting could also be a manifestation of joy and affection for your child. If he’s extremely happy to see his little friends, he might get a little carried away and overwhelmed with emotion manifested in biting.

A baby’s bite is never planned – it’s compulsive. It is definitely unacceptable, but it’s a simple stage that the child will eventually pass through.
