Drew Barrymore is off to see the wizard

Drew Barrymore will sit in the director’s chair and take on the lead role.

In 2002, screenwriter Zach Helm (Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium) talked about a film called Surrender Dorothy with Drew Barrymore in the lead role.

It is a sequel of sorts to the famous Wizard of Oz. The difference being that the Dorothy did not kill the Wicked Witch of the West. The action takes place in present day New York City. The evil witch wants to harm Dorothy’s great-great-granddaughter, who would be played by Barrymore.

Drew Barrymore directed her first film last year, Whip It, in which she also played a role. The actress wants to direct Surrender Dorothy and star in it too, Heat Vision reports.

Barrymore will also get a producer credit with her company, Flower Films.

In the meantime, she stars in Going the Distance with Justin Long and Christina Applegate opening in theatres on August 27.
