Variety has learned that Hoffman will be starring opposite Paul Giamatti in the independent drama Barney’s Version.
The film, inspired by the last novel written by Montreal writer Mordecai Richler who died in 2001, was adapted by Michael Konyves and will be directed by Richard J. Lewis.
Giamatti is playing the lead role, a reckless man who was married three times and is a father of two. He becomes a prime suspect behind the mysterious disappearance of his friend. Hoffman will play his father, a retired policeman.
Filming will begin on August 17 in Rome, and will then resume in Montreal, the Laurentians and New York.
Hoffman is also set to star in Little Fockers alongside Ben Stiller. Production is set to begin in July, while the film opens in 2011.
