Ecstasy to treat trauma

Ecstasy could be used for something other than dancing at all night parties.

U.S. researchers have found a medical use for ecstasy, a.k.a. MDMA. According to a study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, it could help treat trauma victims.

20 people participated in a clinical trial. All were suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and conventional treatments had been unsuccessful.

Eight out of 20 patients received a placebo. Among those who received real MDMA, 83% showed signs of healing. Moreover, there were no side effects.

The ecstasy put the patient in the perfect state to be able to talk about their trauma without being overwhelmed by emotions. This is very useful because all therapies designed to treat trauma victims require the person to look back on the events.

The green light has now been given to conduct a larger clinical trial.
