Eddie Redmayne and Cate Blanchett up for top BAFTA awards

Eddie Redmayne and Cate Blanchett are up for the Best Actor and Best Actress prizes respectively at The EE British Academy Film Awards 2016.

Eddie Redmayne and Cate Blanchett are up for the top acting prizes at this year’s BAFTA Awards.

Eddie Redmayne is once again up for Best Actor for his portrayal of transgender painter Lili Elbe in ‘The Danish Girl’ and will battle Leonardo DiCaprio, up for his performance in ‘The Revenant’, Matt Damon for ‘The Martian’, Michael Fassbender for ‘Steve Jobs’ and Bryan Cranston for ‘Trumbo’.

Last year, Eddie walked away from the ceremony with the prize for his depiction of Steven Hawking in ‘The Theory of Everything’.

Cate has been nominated in the Best Actress category for her performance in ‘Carol’.

She will compete against Alicia Vikander – Eddie’s co-star in ‘The Danish Girl’ – as well as Brie Larson for ‘Room’, Saoirse Ronan for ‘Brooklyn’ and Dame Maggie Smith for ‘The Lady in the Van’.

Both Leonardo and Cate’s films have earned their makers Best Director nominations.

The list features ‘Carol’ helmer Todd Haynes, The Revenant’s Alejandro G Iñárritu, Adam McKay for ‘The Big Short’, Steven Spielberg for ‘Bridge of Spies’ and Ridley Scott, who has been recognised for his sci-fi drama ‘The Martian’.

‘Bridge of Spies’ and ‘Carol’ have earned the most BAFTA nominations with nine nods each, followed by ‘The Revenant’ with eight.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, the biggest movie of 2015, has four nominations in the behind-the-scenes categories with the team’s talents recognised for Original Music, Production Design, Sound and Special Visual Effects.

John Boyega, who plays lead character Finn in J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi sequel, is up for the EE Rising Star Award, which recognises young talent in the movie industry.

The nominations were announced on Friday morning (08.01.16) by Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and The EE British Academy Film Awards 2016 ceremony will take place at London’s Royal Opera House on February 14.
