Enjoy student-led tours of famous Boston universities

Students lead historical tours of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

If you’re visiting the Boston area, you might want to check out famous educational institutions Harvard University, built in 1636, or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT was chartered in 1862 two days before the American Civil War.

The official Harvard tour departs from the Harvard Information Center, in the Holyoke Center Arcade. The tour is student-led and is comprised of an outdoor walk through of the Harvard Yard, providing a history of the university, general information, and a unique view on the student’s individual experience. The tour is around one hour long, and completely free of charge. There is no pre-registration for general visitors, however, if you have a group of 15 or more, reservations are required.

MIT welcomes visitors to campus, and regularly scheduled student-led campus tours are conducted Monday through Friday at 11:00 am and at 3:00 pm, excluding holidays and winter break period (December 13-31). They recommend spending the day in Cambridge to visit the interactive displays of the Corridor Lab, the List Visual Arts Center, exhibits at the MIT Libraries and Archives, the MIT Museum and associated galleries, the Ray and Maria Stata Center, and the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center.
