Enzyme Helps Repair Damaged Nerves

An enzyme may play a role in the regeneration of damaged nerve fibers.

The journal Nature Neuroscience reports that researchers at Harvard and Cambridge Universities have discoverd the enzyme, Mst3b kinase, plays a role in the regeneration of damaged nerve fibers.

This enzyme is already known for its role in neuronal growth regulation. When it is present, it activates the growth of axons in the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Normally, the central nervous system cannot repair damaged nerve fibers which limit a patient’s recovery.

Thus, the use of this enzyme or stimulating agent could help to treat stroke, spinal cord and head injuries.
