Escape the royal wedding in Wales

Anti-wedding camping event planned for Prince William’s big day.

With Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton approaching, a Welsh cultural group is setting up an alternative event called Escape the Wedding, reports the BBC.

Balchder Cymru (Pride of Wales) is organizing the Escape the Wedding camp at a campground near Machynlleth in Wales. Organizers say that they may also plan a march through the town on the royal couple’s big day.

The five-day event will kick off on April 28 and wrap up on May 1, 2011, to overlap with the royal wedding set to take place on April 29 at Westminster Abbey in London.

The reasons for the boycott are largely political. "[Owain] Glyndwr was crowned Prince of Wales when the first Welsh Parliament was held at Machynlleth in 1404," explained Balchder Cymru member, Adam Phillips.

"As far as Balchder Cymru is concerned, Glyndwr was the last Prince of Wales and we do not recognize Prince Charles as the true Prince of Wales."

The anti-wedding camping event will also welcome those who just want to get away from the media circus. "We are giving people an opportunity to escape the razzle dazzle and media hype that will take place when the wedding takes place," added Phillips.
