Fabled plant fights against osteoporosis

A fabled plant contains a substance that can protect the body against osteoporosis.

Korean researchers have made a startling discovery. They isolated components of the vegetable lamb plant, also known as Cibotium barmoetz, that can prevent bone thinning that results in osteoporosis.

According to researchers, these components inhibit the deterioration and destruction of bone in 97% of cells without affecting surrounding healthy cells. This represents a great hope in the treatment of osteoporosis.

This disease is a major problem and most common among the elderly. It is characterized by a decrease in bone mass that puts the elderly at increased risk of fractures, most often of the wrist, spine and hips.

Over 75 million people in Europe, the United States and Japan suffer from osteoporosis. One in three women and one in five men fifty years and older suffer a fracture due to this serious health issue.

By 2050, scientists believe that fractures associated with osteoporosis will increase by 310% for men and 240% for women.
