Famous studio for sale

EMI Records wants to unload Abbey Road studio to help pay off its debt.

According to the Financial Times newspaper, EMI Records has put the most famous recording studio in the world on the market. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Duran Duran and Oasis are just some of the big names who have recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

According to several well-informed sources, the sale could bring in $20 million pounds ($33 million) to help the company offset nearly $200 million in debt.

EMI bought the building situated at 3 Abbey Road in 1929. It was formally known as the Gramophone Company. It was slowly renovated into the world’s first custom-built recording studio that began in its new incarnation in 1939.

It was here that The Beatles recorded nearly all their albums, including their last one, Abbey Road. The picture of the Liverpool lads walking single-file across the street outside the studios became that album’s cover and is one of the most  recognizable pictures in music.

From June 1972 until January 1973, Pink Floyd was at Abbey Road Studios recording Dark Side of the Moon. Two years later, they returned to record Wish You Were Here. More recently, Radiohead recorded its second album there, The Bends.
