Fifth Pirates movie for Johnny Depp?

Captain Jack Sparrow is a popular and lucrative role.

American movie star Johnny Depp is currently negotiating to reprise his role of Captain Jack Sparrow for a fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, reports The Wrap.

Encouraged by the box office success of the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides, Depp is reportedly open to stepping into Sparrow’s boots once again.

Last May, producer Jerry Buckheimer announced he was working on the fifth film, but that he didn’t want to continue the pirate franchise without Depp.

“Hopefully, if this one does well, [Depp] will want to come back and play the character again,” Bruckheimer told the L.A. Times. “But it’s going to depend on the screenplay. It always does. He’s maniacal about not wanting to disappoint his audience.”

The first film released in 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, earned $653 million in worldwide box office. In 2006, Dead Man’s Chest amassed $1.07 billion.

The following year, At World’s End raised $958 million, and this year On Stranger Tides, released in May, has just passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

In the meantime, Depp has been busy filming a cameo for 21 Jump Street, as well as Dark Shadows with director Tim Burton. This year he can be seen in the Hunter S. Thompson adaptation The Rum Diary due out October 28, and in Jack & Jill on November 11.
