Fiona Apple album on the way

The singer shows sign of life and plans to release a new album next year.

One of the most enigmatic artists of the last decade, Fiona Apple will finally release new material. A new album is slated for release in spring 2011, six years after Extraordinary Machine came out in 2005.

Critics heartily approved of that album but her record company did not. Epic Records asked Apple to rerecord the album before its release because execs thought it had little commercial viability.

Word about a new album comes from Apple’s drummer and longtime collaborator Charley Drayton. He talks about it on his profile on the site Modern Drummer. Drayton announced he co-produced Fiona Apple’s new album and also helped with the remix.

Singer-songwriter Michelle Branch revealed a tidbit on Tuesday (September 14). She posted a message on Twitter: "Hate to brag but I heard a couple new Fiona Apple tracks today. Amazing."

New music by Fiona Apple leaked online earlier this year. Billboard.com reports the song So Sleepy is a single co-written by Los Angeles youth at the creative writing non-profit 826LA.
