First Disc for Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI will be releasing his first disc on November 30.

The pope is following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Jean-Paul II, who released a disc of poems interpreted by tenor Placido Domingo in 2008.

This time, the pope will be singing and reciting prayers to the Virgin Mary, coupled with the background of classical music by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Pope Benedict XVI recorded eight pieces for the disc that will be released by Universal Music. The musical portion of his yet-untitled album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

The pope was accompanied by the Choir of the Philharmonic Academy in Rome. The voices were recorded at Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Profits from the sale of the album will go towards music education for disadvantaged children around the world.
