First ever Vegas-style casino opens in New York

The new Resorts World Casino channels Vegas with Times Square-inspired twists.

Starting today, both New York residents and tourists alike can enjoy a a taste of Vegas nightlife while in Queens, reports The New York Times.

The Resorts World Casino – the first casino to open in the state – is connected to the Aqueduct racetrack in South Ozone Park, Queens, and is accessible by subway from Times Square. The lavish venue boasts 5,000 gaming terminals, electronic tables, and some 6,500 parking spots for those traveling by car.

Robotic dealers, multicolored ceiling lights, and a twinkling night sky created from satellite images over 42nd Street, create a distinct Times Square feel inside. Housing additional bells and whistles like an RW Prime Steakhouse, an expansive outdoor terrace and a 130,000 square foot third floor for wedding receptions, daily revenues are forecast at $1.5 million.

Not everyone in New York is thrilled by the newest gambling monolith, however. Originally approved by the Legislature in 2001, the casino has suffered from multiple false starts and delays thanks to critics fearing breeches of constitutional limits on gambling and steep increases of divorce, gambling addiction or suicide.

The Resorts World Casino – owned by gambling giants Genting New York – will open daily at 8:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 a.m. seven days a week.
