First look at The Smurfs

Fans get their first peek at The Smurfs movie.

USA Today published the first images of the new film The Smurfs. It is a film adaptation of the famous comic strip by Belgian cartoonist Peyo.

After Gargamel finally found their village, the Smurfs scattered in the woods to escape. Clumsy Smurf goes the wrong way and ends up in a cave with some others. A  magical portal opens up in the cave and transports some of the Smurfs into Central Park in New York City.

Now Smurfs including Smurfette, Papa Smurf, Clumsy Smurf and Grouchy Smurf have to find their way home.

The Smurfs take refuge in the Big Apple with a human couple played by Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays. They need help because Gargamel followed them through the portal and is wandering around NYC looking for them to steal their magical powers.

The film mixes animation with live action scenes.

Raja Gosnell (Scooby-Doo) directs the film. Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria, Anton Yelchin, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Paul Reubens, John Oliver, Kenan Thompson, B.J. Novak, Jeff Foxworthy, Wolfgang Puck, Gary Basaraba and Tim Gunn complete the cast.

The Smurfs will hit theatres on August 3, 2011.
