Fish twice a week to meet omega-3 needs

Eating fish at least twice a week prevents heart disease.

Experts recommend we eat no fewer than two servings of fish a week in order to meet omega-3 needs that can maintain our cardiovascular health.

Besides reducing the risk of heart disease, two servings of fish a week has been shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and cancer.

The fish that are richest in omega-3 fatty oils include herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout.

Those in the know also offer some other important recommendations. They suggest you vary the types of fish you eat on a regular basis. They also remind fish eaters to pay attention to where the fish comes from; fish can easily be contaminated by various pollutants in the water. This can have a dangerous impact on the human brain and nervous system.

People without documented coronary heart disease are also recommended to include oils and foods rich in alpha-linolenic acid in their diet. This includes flax seed oil, canola oil, and soybean oil plus nuts like almonds and walnuts.
