The New York Times announced yesterday (August 4) that one of the first black models in history has died. Naomi Sims, who shot to stardom in the 1960s, died of cancer at the age of 61.
Sims entered the modeling world in the 60s, becoming the first black woman to grace the cover of Fashion of the Times at the age of 19. During her career, she posed for the covers of Ladies Home Journal, Life magazine, and the American edition of Cosmopolitan.
