Four cups of coffee a day lowers risk of gout

Women who drink four cups or more of coffee a day halve their risk of gout.

Drinking more than four cups of coffee daily reduces a woman’s risk of developing gout by 57%.

Those who drink between two and four cups of coffee daily reduce their risk by 22%, while women who drink one cup a day lower their risk by only 3%.

Gout normally affects more men than women and is associated with an over-indulgence in certain foods and drink.

The Mail Online in the UK explains gout "develops when uric acid, a natural by-product, is not disposed of properly by the body."

A gout attack can last several weeks. The newspaper website adds: "the joint of the big toe swells and becomes so sore that even a sheet resting on it can produce unbearable pain."

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it is still unclear why coffee has this preventative effect against the painful condition.
