France: Following in the footsteps of William the Conqueror

Interactive website allows visitors to Normandy to learn more about the iconic historical figure.

A new initiative from the Calvados Tourist Board in the French coastal region of Normandy invites people to follow in the footsteps of Normandy’s legendary William the Conqueror via an interactive website.

The website offers information on 17 historic sites that were significant in the epic adventure of William the Conqueror, and GPS technology is employed to compare the present-day map to the historical map from that period. The news section of the site also keeps Normandy visitors up to date on associated events going on in the area, including a medieval fair and a guided tour.

From the comfort of home, meanwhile, online visitors can explore the region through a virtual tour of the sites, including the castle and abbeys in Caen, the castle in Falaise and the Bayeux Tapestry. A video, available in both a short and extended edition, shows the 2006 reconstruction of the bloody battle scenes in Hastings.

And for children, the website boasts a Kid’s Corner, offering a glossary and quiz, and a humorous animated version of William the Conqueror’s biography.
