French hotels do not want palace ranking

Some luxurious 5-star hotels fear palace label may deter guests from visiting.

A new hotel classification system in France, which allows a select group of 5-star luxury hotels to stand out with a higher palace ranking, is receiving mixed reviews.

During difficult economic times, particularly in Europe, some hoteliers are finding that promoting luxurious accommodation may not be the best way to win business.

Desseigne Dominique, CEO of the Barrière hotel group, states that the recent classification has already caused some cancellations of conventions and seminars at his palace-rated hotels. During these tough economic times, companies do not want to be seen as spending lavishly on luxurious hotels.

To be awarded the palace label, a hotel must first have a 5-star rating and also be in an historic building in a prestigious setting, with related services and infrastructure (restaurants, health club shaped, etc.), and a staff totally dedicated to guests.

The aim is to label some twenty establishments from among a hundred or so 5-star hotels in France that symbolize “excellence and perfection, luxury and timelessness”.
