Gonorrhea won’t get gone

Gonorrhea is becoming increasingly difficult to treat.

Around the world, doctors are looking for new ways to fight gonorrhea because it is becoming increasingly resistant to drugs.

Since the 1970s, this sexually transmitted disease (STD) has evolved to survive the various treatments, including penicillin and doxycycline.

Next week, experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) will meet to evaluate new options. One possibility is that doctors should prescribe more than one medication to fight the disease.

However, some doctors worry that a complex therapy actually helps to increase the number of cases. This is because patients may abandon a treatment if it is too complicated, thus increasing the transmission rate.

Untreated gonorrhea can cause many complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease. It can also cause ectopic pregnancy and even lead to infertility.

In 2006, an estimated 11,334 people suffered from the disease in Canada.
