Great Pyramid of Giza closed

Egyptian officials close ancient landmark to avoid rituals on ‘mystic’ 11-11-11 date.

In response to rampant rumors of rituals planned "within the walls of the pyramid” on November 11, 2011, Egypt’s antiquities authority have closed the pyramid of Cheops, also known as Khufu, to the public, reports Jerusalem Post.

Citing "necessary maintenance,” the closure of the pyramid follows rumblings of a scheduled meditation ceremony or “ceremony of love” intended "to save the earth from cosmic threats."

Other reports of groups planning to place symbols atop the 450-foot structure – to take advantage of mysterious powers coming from the pyramid on the rare date – have also been circulated by Egyptian Internet and local press.

The two smaller pyramids, multiple tombs and Sphinx that comprise the rest of the Great Pyramids complex will remain open.

The Great Pyramid houses the tomb of Pharaoh Cheops, who ruled Egypt from 2589 to 2566 BC. It is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
