Happy birthday Lady Liberty

New York’s Statue of Liberty turns 125 today.

Today (October 28) marks the 125th anniversary of New York City’s most iconic landmark, the Statue of Liberty.

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, as the landmark is officially known, was first dedicated in its new home on Liberty Island on October 28, 1886, as a gift of friendship from France to the U.S. Events got underway at 10 a.m. this morning in order to mark the occasion, beginning with a special ceremony.

"The Statue has evolved in meaning since she first graced our shores 125 years ago," explained David Luchsinger, superintendent of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

"She began as a symbol of friendship between France and the United States, evolved into a symbol of our great country, and is known today as an international symbol of freedom for people everywhere. This… is an opportunity to celebrate her complete legacy."

As part of the 125th anniversary celebrations, officials will install a webcam in the statue’s torch, allowing people from around the world to admire the view of Liberty Island and the surrounding area. The U.S. will also offer a gift to France in return.
