In Belgium, it’s all about the sax

New museum featuring saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax opens its doors.

Few people know that the saxophone was invented by a Belgian. That’s right, its brilliant inventor, Adolphe Sax was born in the small town of Dinant in Wallonia in 1814.

Although his famous instrument, the saxophone, was created while he lived in Paris, Adolphe Sax had already begun making his own instruments in his hometown of Dinant, following in the footsteps of his father, who managed to support his family with his creations – often developing new sounds for the hunting horns he used to make.

Now the house in which Sax grew up, located at 37 rue Sax, is known as the Maison de Monsieur Sax, or the House of Mr Sax, and houses a museum dedicated to the musical instrument maker, as well as his work as a composer and conductor.

The museum offers visitors a fun journey via sound clips of music and original songs that help tell the story of the saxophone and its inventor.
