Increased security for Tunisian tourist attractions

Government takes precautions in response to threats from extremists.

Tunisia, the northernmost country in Africa, flanked by Algeria to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the east, is still dealing with the fallout from its recent liberation from an authoritarian regime.

The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior is concerned for the safety of tourists. Recently, extremists attacked a cinema in Tunis, and since then rumors of Islamist attacks have been circulating on social networks, reports Agence France Presse.

“This year, there will be particular attention paid to tourist areas to ward off threats against Tunisians or foreign tourists," said ministry spokespersonn Neji Ziiri.

As a precaution, the government plans to beef up security around tourist attractions, particularly in coastal areas and large cities.

Although there was some doubt as to the credibility of the threats, he said, “Regardless of the origin of the threat, we want to guarantee the security of our citizens."

Temporary security posts will be rolled out in three phases over July, August and the first half of September. Areas where large crowds gather, such as festival venues, parks and beaches will especially be monitored.
