Information about anti-wrinkle treatments

Health Canada informs the public about problems that can result from various anti-wrinkle injections.

A new advisory issued by Health Canada states that there could be complications after using commercially available injections to correct wrinkles. There was actually one report of gangrene of the lip.

The filler injections contain a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid (HA) which serves to temporarily erase wrinkles. This substance is also produced naturally by the body.

Health Canada’s most recent newsletter states: "HA dermal fillers are the most popular temporary fillers, and their use is growing." As of March 15, 2010, over 30 HA dermal fillers were licensed for sale in Canada.

At the same time, Health Canada received reports from 32 people about adverse reactions they experienced after being injected with this filler. Reactions included pain, swelling, nodules, abscesses, pus or infection, skin discolouration, necrosis of the lips and difficulty talking, swallowing or breathing.

Some people had a reaction immediately following the treatment. Others experienced a reaction that persisted for weeks or even months after the injection.
