An island has been overrun by cats.

Aoshima in southern Japan is currently home to more than 120 cats, meaning the furry creatures outnumber humans six to one, the Daily Mirror newspaper reports.

The remote location, which is a 30-minute boat trip from Ehime, previously had over 900 people living on it but after World War II, many chose to move to the city.

The cats were originally placed on the island to rid it of mice, which were harming the fisherman’s boats.

It has since become a tourist hotspot.
