PICTURE SHOWS: The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. First edition, on sale for £75000. A rare bookseller has released a new-in catalogue, which features childhood favourites worth tens of thousands of pounds. The list, published by Peter Harrington Rare Books and appearing on their website, includes a first edition of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for £2,750, and an Alice In Wonderland collection, including two first editions, for £10,000. It’s release follows the news of a rare first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone selling for more than £56,000 at auction. What other kids’ classics, worth a small fortune, could be collecting dust in the UK’s attics? The specialist shop, which sell books, manuscripts, first editions and copies in fine bindings, has published it’s ‘what’s new’ list, which also includes poetry, political speeches, classics from the likes of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, and signed letters. Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, and of course Harry Potter, all feature. A first edition of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which includes a note from the author wishing a Miss Annie Price, Merry Christmas, in 1887, is on sale for £90,000. A The Lord of the Rings trilogy, written by JRR Tolkien and made up of first editions, is available for £30,000; while a set, which includes The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book, both by Rudyard Kipling – and once owned by Watership Down novelist, Richard Adams – is £4,500. Signed copies of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry and the Prisoner of Azkaban are on sale for £2,000 and £1,500 respectively. But if your budget only reaches in to the mere hundreds of pounds, there are several Roald Dahl favourites on offer, including a first edition of Matilda, for £500. The list, compiled by the UK’s largest rare bookseller established in 1969, also includes titles from beloved children’s author Beatrix Potter and young adult
