STORY COPY: If you believe the conspiracy theory, America never landed on the moon in 1969 and director Stanley Kubrick created the lunar landing footage. In fact, these fascinating images, taken 49 years ago this week (April 1969), might do little to dispel conspiracy theories. They show Apollo 11 crew on a fake lunar surface clearly in an Earth-based hangar facility. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ("Buzz") Aldrin are seen carrying out tasks on a simulated dusty surface. While the astronauts practice manoeuvres, including collecting soil samples, men in shirts and ties can be seen in the background casually observing the scene. In fact, these are real training simulations carried out in Houston three months before the actually set foot on the moon. The practice sessions were carried out over a number of days in April 1969 in Building 9 of the Texas-based U.S. space agency facility.
