Jennifer Hudson breaks her silence

The singer shares her most intimate pain about the tragedy that changed her life.

Jennifer Hudson seemed to have it all. She was on the fast track to success, thanks to a little show called American Idol.

The Idol finalist was pursuing a music career and had made a foray into acting that earned her an Oscar (Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls in 2006). Then her world came crashing down.

The singer shared her story last night (June 28) on VH1’s Behind the Music: Jennifer Hudson. Fans heard about her rise to fame and the event that changed her life.

"It’s all a blur, it was surreal. It was like I was outside of myself," Hudson revealed. "For almost two weeks straight . . . [I was] inside one room with just family and friends coming in and out."

Her mother, brother and nephew were murdered in October 2008. Her sister’s ex-husband, William Balfour, was charged with first degree murder and home invasion.

Hudson is moving on while holding their memories dear. She has baby now, David Jr., and is engaged to be married to his father, David Otunga.

She thinks about her mom all the time and admits: "In so many ways I channel her because she was such a great mom."
