JetBlue expands operations in Latin America

US carrier JetBlue is adding a New York – Cartagena route starting November 2.

(Relaxnews) – US carrier JetBlue has announced two new routes connecting Colombia’s capital Bogota with the city of San Juan de Puerto Rico, and Colombia’s port city Cartagena with New York.

JetBlue is expanding its operations in South America with the opening of two new routes or possibly three.

The New York-Cartagena route to start on November 2, will operate three times a week connecting passengers from the Big Apple with one of the most popular tourist destinations in Colombia, the city of Cartagena.

The carrier is also adding a Bogota-San Juan de Puerto Rico route at the end of 2013.

According to Colombian daily El Tiempo, Dave Barger, president of JetBlue said flights to and from Colombia have an occupancy rate of between 85 and 90 percent.

Most of the travelers from Colombin are going to Orlando (between 60 and 80 percent), while others use Orlando as a connecting point to other destinations such as New York, Boston and Washington.

Barger also said the airline would like to add a route connecting Venezuela’s capital Caracas with the US.

The carrier already offers flights from the US to Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bogota.
