The Weinstein brothers have recruited Gong Li, and are in talks with John Cusack for the drama Shanghai, which will be filmed next year in China.
The 41-year-old actor will play an American that returns to Shanghai, a corrupted city that was occupied by Japan before the attack of Pearl Harbor. When he tries to figure out the details of his friend’s death, he falls in love and discovers a lot of government secrets.
Mikael Hafstrom is directing the movie and has previously worked with Cusack on the movie 1408. Hossein Amini will write the screenplay.
