John Paul Gaultier is to design a range of home textiles and accessories.

The French fashion designer will move into the world of home furnishings after signing a deal with Paris-based fabric specialist Lelievre.

He told WWD: "I’m only a couturier. My metier is the art of dressing, and I’ve channeled the codes of my collections into these furnishing fabrics."

The company also markets curtains, cushions and throws under brands including Missoni Home, Sonia Rykiel Maison, Alacantra and Kenzo Maison.

Previously Gaultier branched out to become the creative director of Diet Coke, taking over from Karl Lagerfeld at the world famous soft drinks company.

In homage to his curvaceous perfume bottles, his Diet Coke model is in the shape of a woman.

He explained: "It was great fun to dress them. The Diet Coke motif is so beautiful I had to design around this. The finishing touch was to apply my logo to the bottle, like applying a fragile stamp – making it something special you want to touch."

As well as Lagerfeld, Gaultier also followed in the footsteps of Matthew Williamson, Gianfranco Ferrè, Marni and Roberto Cavalli, who have all designed bottles before him.

He also developed a "provocative" lingerie collection with Italian brand La Perla, saying: "Lingerie is part of my DNA: I have always used it in my collections. With La Perla, I have found a perfect partner."
